Research into the face and body is a recurring theme throughout the course of art history and can be found in different cultures: Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Modern Times up until now.

Depicting the human face means capturing the identity of man, seeking for permanence. It represents a cultural unit embracing universal human needs. The human face can convey and conceal, can evoke and invoke.

Throughout its long historical journey the human face has been subject to context, beliefs and values. It has undergone remarkable transformations, nevertheless maintaining the role of interpreting man’s emotions, desires and aspirations.

Iconic human faces include the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci, Girl with the Pearl Earring by Vermeer, Self-Portrait with Straw Hat by Van Gogh, Arnolfini Portrait by Van Eyck.

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Klimt, Portrait of Gertrude Stein by Picasso, The Two Fridas by Frida Khalo, and Marylin Monroe by Warhol.

The repertoire of faces in art history, however, is so broad that, for our study, it’s perhaps enough to embrace them all as a a unit of shared interest, rather than diving into their own singularities developed over the course of the centuries.

Our focus shall be on highlighting new digital achievements, looking at generative artworks engaged with the subject of faces, positioning them within this long-lasting artistic narrative. The four selected artists beautifully contribute to enrich this scenario.

AI mask by @AITezoart is an intriguing artwork created with artificial intelligence, whose rarity has been achieved by working on layers. The human face is here concealed by a mask, and that mask is duplicated.

One eye, however, stares at us in a central position. Physically & metaphorically the third eye, it becomes the focal point of the composition, whose light, colour & intensity resonate with a variety of facial traits, exuding an aura of ambiguity and mystery.

Humanoids @AkkrinCA engages with a fauvist colour palette. In some ways, reminiscent of Matisse’s vibrant, flat application of colours and collages, the human face is here erased. There are no facial traits, only a portrait-like silhouette before our eyes.

Colors become feelings, shapes become traces of human existence.

nOOOD Women by @nhephex is a witty collection depicting stylized portraits of naked women. Akin to pen drawing, thin lines emerge on the screen capturing large eyes and amusing expressions though a cartoon-like visual.

Minimalism and humor seem key to achieve accomplished portraits, where art and life don’t need to be always so serious.

Modern AbstractHash @Aksani61999179 is a whimsical series of works suspended in space in a dream-like atmosphere. The immediate focus is on the cubist approach, where elements are deconstructed and rebuilt from a multitude of viewpoints through simplification of geometric forms.

Each component is, however, depicted with playfulness through pastel-like colors, creating a surrealist scenario evoking the lightness that permeates Miro’s compositions.
